Q: Multiple Kernel Panics

My MacBookPro has been having multiple kernel panic since a couple of weeks ago (maybe more)... I was still using Yosemite because when I updated to "El Capitan" last year my Mac became unstable and very slow, I ended changing its hard disk...

I though that the current problem was that I was still using Yosemite so I decided to do a clean installation... Then I went to App Store to look for updates, while updating iMovie a kernel panic occurred again...

do you have other panic reports that have different panic reasons, panic occurred in different routines, with different extensions present? or are all the panic reports almost the same?

Since I could't find the Sony Driver (com.sony.driver.dsccamDeviceInfo00) I uninstalled Little Snitch first... Then I updated a Sony Software I use for my Camera (Play Memories)... Waiting to see the results... I plan to upgrade Tuxera if needed...

Thanks for your answer, I will keep you informed...

Unfortunately for whatever reason I can only find the latest Kernel Panic report... I guess the other logs were deleted when I did the clean installation... If it happens again I will post it here (hopefully not any time soon, fingers crossed ;-)...

In addition to what has been suggested, take out the third party RAM and install the original RAM.  See if the panics stop.

According to Apple's specifications, your model can use at most 8 GB of memory, but you've installed 16 GB. The results are unpredictable. See, for example, this ASC discussion.

The manual for the product gives instructions for adding aftermarket memory that read something like this:

You can add two 4 GB memory modules for a maximum of 8 GB of memory.

I know that the aftermarket RAM vendor says that the out-of-spec configuration will work. If you accept that assurance, please ask the vendor for help with any problems that arise. Otherwise, reinstall the original memory, or new memory that meets the official specifications.

Apple specifications when originally posted when the MBP model was introduced allowed for up to 8 GB RAM.  That has not been changed by Apple and therefore does not reflect that advances that RAM manufactures have made subsequently.  As long as the specifications are correct, 16 GB RAM have proven to work in the MBP under discussion.  In short, the original limitation by Apple is now obsolete.

    Cia0.

Obviously, Apple is the only reliable source for the technical specifications of its own products—not aftermarket RAM vendors who want to sell RAM.

When Apple originally published that specification, it was valid and accurate.  However in the world of technology, specifications are always in flux as improvements are made.  Various RAM manufacturers have determined that 2012 MBPs will accept and operate with out flaw with 16 GB RAM as long as it meets the 2012 MBPs specifications.  This is not unusual and has been the case for many MBP models in the past.

Yes, RAM manufacturers are in the business of selling RAM as Apple is in the business of selling MBPs.  If neither wanted to sell their products, we would not have the benefits that they offer.

    Ciao.

This is the latest panic report...   It happened when App Store was updating iMovie to version 10.1.2 released on April 29 2016, even though this version was already installed on July 8 2016

Besides I'm getting the "This message contains invalid characters" annoying message so hete is the link to pastebin:

... so what I was leading up to before, is ... when you have kernel panics for different, unrelated reasons, that may be an indication of a NON-Trend. NON-Trend suggests memory or peripheral device problems (usually USB devices). MacOS slightly randomizes the load address of routines on each new Startup, to eliminate the ability to hacking a specific Address.

When your kernel panics seem to be random, RAM Memory is most likely to be the culprit.

I've been dealing with repeated kernel panics that appear to be random in the way you've described.

One of the first things I did was switched out my RAM dimms one by one to see if I could determine that one was bad by trial and error. I was continuing to get repeated kernel panics often on startup regardless of which RAM I was using.

I was unable to boot from the recovery volume: kernel panic on startup.

On running disk utility on a internet recovery boot, I found irreparable disk errors on the startup volume. I erased the volume and reinstalled the OS. No panics for 8 hours or so. They then started up again, repeatedly.

My question is whether a kernel panic caused by a RAM problem could happen again, despite changing out the ram, on a subsequent restart because of a ancillary problem that was caused by the underlying RAM issue, e.g. during my trial and error test of my ram dimms when I was still experiencing kernel panics, could the RAM issue have caused a disk issue, for instance, that could have just been remedied by disk utility?

I know the question is a little convoluted. I'm at a loss after 3 days of reboots, verbose, safe mode, reinstalls, switching ram, one trip to a genius bar, etc.

Thanks for your reply... Other users have also pointed out the RAM Memory as a cause. The thing is that I changed the RAM in October last year and the problems started like two or three months ago, at the beginning the Kernel panic event was not occurring so often so I did't pay attention, but the last two weeks this activity has increased to the point that I can't work peacefully anymore especially when using Lightroom for example...

I installed iMovie (the last obvious cause for the recent kernel panics) to solve the issue of the repeated update I was having (the system had updated the app on July 8th but a new update for the same version dated April 12 was showing)...

I also updated Tuxera to the 2015 version...

I will monitor the situation to see if it improves... I don't have anymore the original RAM so I hope these problems are not related to it...

Sorry to hear that your are facing the same situation... It is a pain to deal with it! As I wrote to an other user who replied to my post, many have pointed out about the RAM... I changed mine last year from 8Gb to 16Gb, I didn't have any troubles until recently, so it can be an issue with the recent updates on the OS...

Last year I had to change my disk cause when I installed "El Capitan" my old hard disk failed... I have now a SSD... If you have disk errors I suggest to do a Backup as soon as possible and change your hard disk because it can fail anytime as mine did.

I don't want to think that all these problems are a conspiracy from Mac to force us to use the original hardware
