i have a new iPad Pro and when I try to close the cover of the case it's in the iPad does not auto lock.

According to the manufacturer's website, that cover should contain magnets that would activate the lock. Have you contacted them to ask about ways to troubleshoot this with the iPad Pro?
Hi, I have the same issue with a new Ipad pro 9.7 with iOS 10.1.1.
The setting lock/unlock is enabled, but using the same cover that used to work with an iPad air 2, is not working with this one.
The screen remains turned on and unlocked.
Forgive me for asking, but did you go to Settings>General>Lock/Unlock>On? ..... And do you have a cover that has magnets in it that cause the device to lock and unlock? There are zillions of covers and cases available but you don't state which one you have.
I have the iPad Pro 9.7 inch which is the newest version. I have triple checked for a lock/unlock feature and it's not there so that's definitely automatic. I'm going to test my iPad and case on friends ipad Pro and apple case to try and figure which one is not working properly. Maybe the new iPad Pro is not compatible with any case other than Apple case for the moment.
The iPad Pro doesn't have the lock/unlock option It's automattic. I have the moshi versa cover.

I Had similar problem with my ipad pro and it was the settings . Go into settings-general- lock/unlock and make sure it is on . Shows green .
I Suggested that and Astroted says that it is not in the settings on the iPad Pro. However, there are two iPad Pro versions, so maybe it is automatic in the newest one?
Lock/unlock is in Settings>Display and Brightness.
It was no problem, before I upgrade IOS 10.0.2. The day after upgrade, I coverd my I pad as I usually done, but battery is fully discharged through the night. I think it's bug of IOS.
Hi. Have you checked the Lock/Unlock setting, which has moved to Settings > Display and Brightness, as already noted above?
I am sure I've done above setting every time, I turn on my I-pad pro.
I Have one more additional information, when I discovered my moshi cover, on IOS it never display Lock/unlock option.
It means my pad recognized my Moshi cover. Sorry, I'm not native English speaker.
