Q: Server 5.1.5 RIP - 10.6.8 Server FTW!

Not sure if anyone else have had as many issues as I've had with server since 10.7 and the "Server App" rolled around.

Used and still using 10.6.8 Server in our environment and stable as **** compared to anything beyond 10.6.8 Server. I've upgraded to a new 6 Core MacPro running all the latest of everything and just have had no luck. It's proven to afford more headaches than solutions.. I've actually had to revert back to one of our old xServe's running 10.6.8 Server to have staff be able to work again. Ironic that a fraction of the hardware spec and 5 OS version back is working perfect. File browsing and over all connection to the server just degrades during the day and comes to a complete stand still close to the end of the day. This issue cause major crashes on the end users machines and finder freezes.

I wish Apple would consider people like myself being the Sys Admin for a company and have religiously used Apple for more than a decade

Bring back the Standalone Server OS!! if not give us a compiled version only containing the needed bits without the bloat of the end user experience.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

    So... what's your technical issue?

I've been running server from 10.8 onward without any issues for users or the server itself...

Can you describe your issues and maybe we can find some solutions.

Are you referring to file server access and browsing slowing down throughout the day?

Are your user's connecting to the file server via SMB or AFP?

Please submit your feedback directly to Apple, if you'd like Server Admin.app back.

If you're having issues with Server.app, please report those to Apple via the feedback link in the Server.app menus.  Or please report those more directly to Apple Support.    Why?   There are more than a few permutations possible with servers and their configurations, and it's certainly possible that the bugs you're seeing are not arising elsewhere.

My issue is mainly file sharing via the latest server. How many end devices do you have connecting to your server and what storage do you use? I've been battling with this issue for months and have tried any and almost all possible tweaks and fixes one can find on the forums.

I've found that with 10.10.5 clients and using SMB on the server for file sharing is problematic. Been running AFP only on all shares which worked fine most of the time.

Thanks for the info, have been submitting bits of info as I discover it. Trail and error at best as the issue is no constant. Would love if Apple brought back the standalone server OS instead of this app business.

Yep, SMB is problematic.  We had identical issues as you... over the day the server would slow down to a complete halt until restart.  Same exact issue occurred on several distinct networks and servers we manage.

Make sure all your clients are connecting via AFP, and the issue will not occur.

This has been an issue for quite awhile now.

Correct, Apple changed the version of AFP as well with 10.11 which seem to have some issues as well. We have about 280 machine connecting to the server and for some reason similar to SMB, AFP starts degrading and you see the CPU usage go from 90% to 900% and stay there.

Strangely enough if I reset the Finder and Dock on all the client machines connected to the server it drops back down to 90% and functions fine again..

Also try the macOS Sierra beta, given that's now widely available.  Log reports against that.
