Q: parental controls on device with child's Apple ID

I purchased an iPod touch for my son. I want him to have his own Apple ID so his texts and emails, etc will go straight to the device. But I still want to set up parental controls for content filtering. Can this be done and how? Thank you

What ID is used is independent of the ID used.

You might want to setup Family Sharing if you have a compatible device.

It looks like Family Sharing is for children under 13, my son is 17. But the information is still very helpful. Thank you.

You can still use Family Sharing. Family Sharing also included means to create an Apple ID for those under 13 since one has to be at least 13 to create an Apple ID. Since you son is 17 he can legally create his own ID. Family Sharing would allow your son to use/install/download media purchased with your ID

The main thing is I want to install parental controls on his iPod, which will be registered under his Apple ID (he doesn't have one yet). Controls that only I can change. I don't think family sharing will allow me to do that.

You have to setup Restrictions on his device and use a passcode that only your know
