Q: Removing unknown folders from private directory

Hi,

The following folder is taking about 12G of disk space and I wanted to know if it is safe to remove it. The folder has 5 huge binary files suffixed .pkg and 3 small files named receipt.staged,receipt, and preflight.pfpkg. Looks to me a failed install. Rebooting mac does not clean this folder.

/private/var/folders/22/z3zm_f8x2t54x0qyxncc5fk80000gn/C/com.apple.appstore/4977 99835

it is advised you backup your computer before proceeding.
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

if it is your apple store cache you can remove it safely by
closing app store and all open windows on your desktop
going to terminal and typing
open $TMPDIR../C/
then deleting the folder
com.apple.appstore
any INCOMPLETE download from the app store will be deleted and the folder will be recreated when you open the App Store.
empty your trash to reclaim the storage to your storage device.
