Using mp2 audio files on El Capitan

Hello everyone,

I have recently started work in big radio broadcasting company and primary audio format is mp2(seen on Finder and Win explorer as wave). I've been trying to work on these files in Wavelab 8 LE, which is my private program and IMO most user friendly one. But there's a problem when I open any of mp2-wave files on my macbook, Wavelab says that i haven't compatible driver. Is there any sollution for that? I can't lose quality on converting or simply use other file extention

A .mp2 file and a .wav file are totally different things. A .mp2 file is a lossy compressed file, a .wav file is a lossless uncompressed file. The Mac running El Capitan can play both as standard.

I don't have Wavelab 8 LE but I was able to play example .mp2 files from the following link with no problems using the built-in El Capitan software. See http://mpgedit.org/mpgedit/mpgedit/testdata/mpegdata.html I did not try every single example but all the ones I did worked fine.

Note: Older versions of OS X did not as standard have the ability to play these files as standard, I can't remember whether it was Mavericks or Yosemite that added support for them but as mentioned El Capitan still can. Also .mp2 (also referred to as .mpa) while an audio file it was often associated with .m2v as both were part of the MPEG2 suite. This audio format is sometimes used on DVDs and is still widely used on MPEG2 standard definition TV broadcasts.
