trying to setup airport base station for time machine backup

Are you using a computer with wireless??
Don't.
Use an ipad or iphone.. download the airport utility or iOS.
Or use computer with ethernet connection and wireless off.
Setting up wireless by wireless in a Mac is akin to sawing off the branch you are sitting on.
I can believe that. I was able to connect on my Iphone. beside providing a wifi connection how does it use my 3 TB of backup ? or does it?
I am trying to set up a time machine back up.
If I understand your instructions You are telling me to turn off my WI Fi on my mac,(I already have airport Utility installed
and have had this base station working in the past) then attache the Base station to my Mac via an ethernet cable and and proceed from there?
Just for the setup. Once it is setup you should be able to get the TC to work fine over wireless.. as long as the computer is linking to the TC wireless not via another router.
But for setup use ethernet.
