How do you search for a file in Time Machine?

How do you do searches in Time Machine? (El Capitan)

Specifically, if you have know that files are in the backup stream somewhere, and you have a partial file name, or even a complete filename, how do you find which backup the file is in?

I could really use a step-by-step guide here.

My case: I know that somewhere in years of backups are several files with the word "Contract" in the name. Eg: Contract 2016 XYZ rewrite.pdf, and I want to find those files. I don't know the complete names nor the folder locations (but lets assume, if it is easier, that I can guess the folder location, which may or may not still exist). How do I find those files?

I've played with search in Time Machine for a few frustrating hours and I can't figure it out at all. The Search field shows nothing, even if I am currently browsing a folder that has one of those files right there and even if I type in the full name. When I type in the search field, some more criteria show up below the search field that let me specify 'name contains' and such. Sometimes this finds things, but only if I click on the 'this mac' button but that is a minefield of usability confusion.

I've used a third party tool to find backed up files, but then I have to go into Time Machine and search for specific backups one at a time. And every time I press the Up or Down arrow in the Star Wars display, it goes to the first (2014) or last (today) backup so seems useless.

The posts I read all say things like 'go to the folder containing the file'. How do I find that if I don't have the whole many-year history of my file system memorized?

Thanks - sorry if this sounds whiny. It has been very frustrating.

Thanks Carolyn, but that was the page I started with. Unfortunately, the instructions there for search do not work or I am doing something wrong. If I go to a folder and type a file name in that is right in that folder, it finds nothing. And there is no indication of how to search the entire archive.

As with most Apple documentation, there are some major assumptions they make that I don't start with (in this case, that you already know how Time Capsule is intended to be used and that you understand the search already).

I have MacBook Pro using Sierra and I have time capsule. When I enter a file to be searched after I selected Time Capsule under Shared Devices in the MacHardDisk automatically after I hit search on the file name entered MacBook deselects the time capsule and moves the cursor to "MacBookPro" and searches MacBookPro but not the Time Capsule where the files are located and I am trying to search. I am not trying to recover a file in either MacBook or Time Capsule, I am trying to search and find a file in time capsule without having to open too many folders. Doing this same operation from my Lenovo Thinkpad in the network goes very smooth and thorough but I would like to do it from MacBook pro while I am using this computer and I can't. Entering the file name at the spotlight I can't trust it as it does not show where is searching and it gives a very fast but incomplete search.

I do not know if this will help in your specific situation, but ...

There is a nice utility from the App Store called EasyFind (icon is like a squirrel).

You might download it and then from the drop down menu in the upper right, search your TM external. The search options are quite extensive - if you don't know a file name for example you can d oa Wildcard. It has Boolean search. If your contracts have certain key phrases common to all (or most - as mine do - e.g. "consideration", "force majeure" or the like) those can be searched, as well.

Hope this helps!
