Can't open anything from Finder
I can't open anything from Finder - it will go to the app but won't open the document. If I can open the document from the app but not from Finder

Make sure OS X is up to date.
Open System Preferences > App Store then click: Check Now
Yes it is up to date - that's the first thing I did - I had other issues with opening up links and documents in mail - but a suggestion of starting up in safe mode seems to have fixed this issue as well - thanks
In Safe Model Were you able to open files from Finder by double-clicking?
Since it worked in Safe Mode, I'd look to your User preferences files
In Finder Froom your "Go"menu chhose "Go to folder" then copy & paste this line into the Go to Folder text window and move these files to your Desktop.
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
EDIT: Disregard the above, I see you already sloved it.
