Q: compressor 3 and Youtube

Hello.

I'm using FCP 7 with Compressor 3.  I'm trying to up load to Youtube the highest quality video possible, I shot and created a HD 1920 x 1080 video shot in 24p.  Compressor 3 comes with a Youtube setting and I did upload the video, but it creates a 720 hd file and not a 1080 hd file, question is, can I get a higher res with a different setting?. I've uploaded videos in 1080 in the past before discovering the Youtube setting but have some issues with the video, and the Youtube setting fixed that.  Just wondering if I can get it any higher a resolution than 720, or should I leave well enough alone.

Thank you for your assistance!

No reason why you can't create a 1080 MOV and upload it. Start with a QuickTime movie setting and customize it. In Compressor 4.2 the default YT 1080 preset is a high (20 Mbps) bit rate h.264 file. You could do the same in Compressor 3. Or you could do what a lot of users do and upload a Pro Res file – the theory being that YT recompresses everything so they might as well upload a very high quality intra-frame codec that will stand up better to the recompression. The downside, of course, is that the upload takes more time.

    Good luck.

    Hi Russ,

Are you talking about uploading a Pro Res File that is no compressed yet, as a .mov or QuickTime file without converting or compression in h.264?

    Thanks!

Yes, I am. Obviously the Pro Res files will be very large, and the upload times will be a lot longer. So it will require a fast and reliable internet connection as well as patience. Whether the incremental quality is worth it (or even discernible) will depend on the original material, the playback equipment and how critical are the eyes of the viewer.

Do a test. Take a short demanding section of a sequence and run it through Compressor with one 1080 setting applied as H.264 @ 20 Mbps and the other applied as Pro Res 422 (or Pro Res LT). Then upload the two to YT and compare.

    Good luck.
