Hello drimran,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I see you have an issue where you get an error or alert while trying to activate iMessage. I understand how important it is to stay in contact with your friends and family. Before we start checking some of the possibilities that can cause this, you may want to create a backup of all the data on your iPad. You can backup all your data in iTunes or iCloud. This link will help with that: How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes.

I recommend that you start with this help article from Apple: If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime. It has lots of great info about the exact issue you seem to be having.

If you have gone through the entire article and still have an issue, it may be related to the network you are using. This can be caused by connecting to a free wireless network like from a school, work, or other business, the airport, a military base, or a hotspot type of a network. These types of networks may not allow you to sign in as expected. You will have to move to a different network, or use cellar data only to sign in. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and turn W-Fi off. Then, try to sign in over the cellular network.

You may also have third party virus protection, firewalls, or proxies that hide your identity from the internet. These do not have to be set up on the iPad, but could be set up on the router. Some security apps also do this - there are literally hundreds of such apps that you can download and install on your devices. They provide security by blocking incoming ports. You can test this also by using the cellular network only, if it is available on your iPad.

You may need to try this reset too: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network. Use the section titled 'Still can't connect?' and follow the steps to Reset Network Settings. This brings network settings back to the factory defaults.

Thanks again for starting here with your question. Have a great rest of your day.
