Q: Does the TM backup drive need to be reformatted after swapping the HDD of an iMac?
Hello,
I replaced a failing HDD (1TB) on a late 2009 iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. The whole content of the HDD was backed up on NAS using Time Machine. I have installed a new 1TB HDD, rebuilt the OS and succesfully restored the most recent TM backup.
Now, it appears that the TM incremental backup process takes a very long time. It looks like I can go back in time to backups made prior to the restore. The iMac is connected to the network using the Ethernet connection.
My question is if it is necessary to reformat the NAS and start a fresh new TM backup - the reason I ask is because I am not sure if the TM backups are somehow linked / related to the HDD model or ID ( if such thing exists) and wonder if the actual poor TM backup performance could be impacted by the existing pre-restore backups that might contain some information about the old HDD.
Please advise if there is a best practice procedure for dealing with the TM backup drive after swapping the HDD of an iMac. Any input appreciated.
Thanks,
AP
