Clean install OSX Mavericks to OSX El Capitan?

The heading says it all: How do I do a clean install to replace Mavericks with El Capitan?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), 21.5", 3.1 GHz i7

If you have a drive or partition available that has no OS installed, you can direct the OS X installer app to install onto that drive or partition. This option is available when you first launch the installer. If you have no bootable backup of your current system, you should get a drive, and clone your existing system onto it as a safety net before proceeding
