TESCO cannot unlock my iphone?

Hi,

My sister gave my daughter her used iphone 4 (I know....it's old). However, it seems that it is network locked to TESCO. My husband told my sister to call TESCO hotline number to have the phone unlocked but TESCO support said that she had to bring it to service center before it can be unlocked. Another option is to have the phone unlocked somewhere here in the Philippines by asking some service center to unlock it.

The two statements are conflicting. Can anybody from Apple give me the correct procedure to have this phone activated? Your support is highly appreciated.

Only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it. The Philippines guy will happily take your money, but he won't unlock the phone.

Or worse, the guy in the Philippines will jailbreak your phone to unlock it.

And Apple is not here to give you the correct procedure.

Carriers unlock phones, not Apple.

Do I really have to send the phone back to UK just to have it unlocked? AFAIK there's no need, my sister should only call TESCO and have it unlocked and TESCO would in turn ask Apple to update their database.

There is no technical reason the phone has to be taken to TESCO, but if it is their policy you have no choice. You can try calling again.
