Q: Netflix & Hulu Black Screen

Hello all.

The past two days Netflix and Hulu are giving me issues on my ATV 4. The apps work fine on my other tv's. The menus work and i can select shows or movies to watch, but when i hit play the screen goes black and i can still hear the audio. Also, the network name stays visible, in the lower corner, on some tv shows.

I have tried all the suggestions for troubleshooting...unplugged, new HDMI, restarted ATV, restarted modem & Airport Extreme. I even reset he Atv back to factory specs. Still doesn't work right. All my other apps and games work fine.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

It really sounds like an HDMI problem. You say you tried a different cable, so you've reconnected both ends already. Could you try another HDMI input on the TV, to rule out a possible problem at tne connector? Is the cable "high speed"? Should be marked on the connectors, or printed right on the cable. That indicates that it's up to the current standard.

(Me too.) You said other apps work, so I assume you can play other videos. I have two other thoughts. Is it possible that parental controls are enabled and these shows are being blocked due to their ratings? Is it possible that these shows are not available in your region? These both seem unlikely since you are getting audio.

Do your other TVs have Apple TVs and if so, are they ATV 4?

Is your ATV 4 running the latest tvOS 9.2.1? Check Settings>General>About to confirm.

Have you allowed the apps to update automatically? If you go to app store under Purchased, they should have all been updated on or after May 16, 2016, the release date of 9.2.1. I'm looking for a possible software incompatibility here. Things have been changing pretty significantly, so a software mixup could be bad.

Sorry to persist, but did you actually check the status of tvOS and the apps, as I described?

Have you checked on the Netflix and Hulu websites for possible problems with ATV? They may have released duff updates.

Also, have you tried signing out of the apps, force closing them, then starting them up and signing in again?
