Q: Sudden kernel panic while browsing

Hi, Macbook Pro late 2008 running osx 10.9.5, osx crashed and rebooted while I was browsing with Firefox. This is the crash report, do I have to worry about it?

Did you make any changes, software- or hardware-wise, recently? If not, there's no obvious reason to worry as far as I can tell. If it happens again soon, just post a follow-up to this topic.

Thanks for the answer, I hope it was a random crash.

"a freed zone element has been modified: expected

    0xdeadbeefdeadbeef but found

    0xdebdbeefdeadbeef

This is a common symptom of failing RAM

You could run Rember overnight to see if it will detect the problem.

    <http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/>

    Set Loops: [X] Maximum

    and run overnight

    Memory Module: BANK 0/DIMM0, 2 GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz, 0x0000, -

    Memory Module: BANK 0/DIMM1, 2 GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz, 0x0000, -

Do you by any chance have 3rd party RAM installed.  The 0x0000 signature is not typical for Apple provided RAM.

If this is 3rd party RAM contact your supplier and see about getting replacements.

If this is Apple RAM, I assume you are out of warranty and Apple Care.  You could take it to the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store and have them check it out, but you do not need to have them replace the RAM.  Rather you could get RAM from a 3rd party.  For those the forum has a lot of respect for MacSales.com and Crucial.com as providers of reliable Mac RAM.

I'm not sure it is related to this crash but the Soundflower kernel extension is from 2010…

    https://code.google.com/archive/p/soundflower/downloads

That project has changed hands, see here for the latest version or the removal instructions (the old Google code download may have one for version 1.5.2)…

    https://github.com/mattingalls/Soundflower

I'd also check that Logitech's software is up to date (3.9.3 vs the installed 3.9.1), it rarely helps to have old stuff installed.

    http://support.logitech.com/en_us/software/logitech-control-center-for-macintosh -os-x

Apple hardware test can check your RAM too…

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

It may catch more errors than Kelleys Rember but try both when you have time, Rember can't check the areas of RAM that is used by the OS.

Thanks for the answers! I changed RAM  a few years ago, and yes it's a third party RAM, probably made by Crucial, I can't remember at the moment. I'll run the tests you suggested.

Contact your RAM vendor.  Provide them with that information and they should send you replacement RAM and then you use the same box to return the failed RAM to them.  If it was Crucial, they should do this without giving you any trouble.

Thanks for your help, RAM manufacturer probably doesn't exist anymore (Iceberg technology is the name). Do you suggest to change the RAM modules with Crucial as soon as possible?

Yup or at least work out which module it is & remove it. Kernel panics can corrupt data on disk(s) if you are unlucky you can lose more than just open unsaved files.

Crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected Mac RAM vendors.  I've used both and do not have any preference.

Your Mac should support 8GB, and since your vendor is not available to get a free replacement, you might consider just buying an 8GB upgrade.  It should run around US$50'ish for your system.

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.
