The best way is just to use common sense and don't download third party apps, don't use torrents. Other than that you can install AdBlock to stop pop-ups. If you do happen to get malware, Download and run MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC. It gets rave reviews and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.

EDIT: Don't use any kind of Internet Security App as these will create more problems than they solve.

The Malware Bytes downloaded successfully and announced that it is not supported by OS 10.7.5. It was a dud.

You need an earlier version for 10.7. Click on this link and the download will start.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac 1.0.2.8

Downloaded, scanned . . . said nothing was wrong.

Must be time to upgrade to a newer version of MacBook.

    Money, money, money.

I'm not sure if that version Malwarebytes has definitions for the newer malware or not.

Yes, It's always money! You might try the refurbished ones from Apple, they are reported to be very good and come with warranty. But as I said, safe practices are best and thankfully on OS X, you have practically have to invite the malware in.
