Q: Magic Trackpad 2 Unwanted Clicks

My Magic Trackpad 2 is almost unusable due to unwanted clicks. I have "Tap to Click" disabled, "Secondary Click" disabled, "Force Click" disabled, and "Click" set to "Firm". However, as I lightly swipe my finger over the trackpad, it will occasionally click. Similarly, click-and-drag is almost impossible as while I am dragging, with thumb pressing down for the click and index finger swiping for the motion, the trackpad will again just click without me lifting my thumb. Finally, sometimes single clicks (actual pressing down) turn into double click - I can hear the trackpad rapidly clicking twice despite me only pressing down once.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on and how to address it? I don't think the device is broken because it is fairly new.

    Hi, mfkamprath!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I understand that your Magic Trackpad 2 is not responding as you'd expect; in fact, it's clicking when you don't intend it to. I know that unwanted clicks can impact your overall experience using the computer, and want to help!

To get started, check out the various Multi-Touch gestures you can use with your trackpad from the article linked below, and make sure you're not inadvertently using any that could cause a click.

Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac

If there aren't an inadvertent gesture clicks that could be the issue, I would suggest removing your Magic Trackpad 2, and setting it back up. You can use the "Remove a Bluetooth device from your Mac" section of the following article to remove the trackpad.

Using a Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, or trackpad with your Mac

The "Magic Mouse 2, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad 2" of the article below will help you get the trackpad set up again.

Set up your Apple wireless devices

If you're still having trouble after removing and setting the Magic Trackpad 2 up, my next suggestion would be to follow the steps in the article linked below.

If your pointer is jumpy when you use a trackpad, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse

While the title of the article isn't specific to your issue exactly, the steps will still address the unexpected behavior you're experiencing.

    Cheers!

Corrie 84 showed you some good steps to take but it appears you are running Yosemite and you have a Magic trackpad version 2.   I suggest you upgrade to El Capitan, 10.11.5 and your trackpad should function correctly from there.

@Seventy One - Sorry, my profile isn't updated. I am using El Capitan 10.11.5. Thanks.

I have this exact same problem. My magic trackpad 2 worked great for about 6 months but now the max I get is about 2 or 3 days without the issue reappearing.

I've contacted Apple support directly, followed all their steps and nothing worked. The person which I talked in support even suggested I returned the magic trackpad 2 since it could be faulty, specially because all his suggested steps failed. I've tried returning it but to my surprise they didn't accept it since they couldn't replicate the issue.

After not being able to return the magic trackpad 2 I've tried using it again and, surprise it worked great again for 1 more month. Now, the problem keeps coming back, and the only thing that seems to make it temporarily work for a couple of days straight is when I remove it from my bluetooth devices, and leave it disconnected for a few days (which is what happened when I tried to return it and I waited for a few days from Apple's) . When I connect it again it works for maybe 1 or 2 days.

Note that I've also already tried cleaning all the trackpad related bluetooth settings files but with no avail.

Again, I've tried everything I've found in the internet. This issue is ridiculous and what's more ridiculous is that I've paid 140 € for it, it doesn't work and I can't return it.

@SEBET Yeah, I'm getting a lot of the "did you try restarting your computer" type IT help desk responses too. I'm actually to the point of considering the Magic Trackpad 2 a piece of junk and will buy an older model off eBay, which I used for years with no problem.

Yeah. I'm also tired of generic replies.

I'm now using a cheap mouse which works every time I connect it.

Apple, please give us some solutions or at least some way for us to be able to return it if it doesn't work.

Can someone please reply to this issue?

I've posted my similar issue in detail.

What can be causing the click triggering issue to disappear when the magic trackpad2 is removed for some days? Is there anything you suggest?

    Thank you.

Can someone care to reply to this issue please?

It is unacceptable that Apple doesn't even care to reply. This is a 150 € accessory! Can you please read the issue and provide your insight at least?

Please  understand this reply is not on behalf of Apple.    Apple itself does not get involved in the contents of posts in these forums.  These are user to user question and answer columns offering advice but no more.

There are moderators who belong to Apple, one or two of whom will step in with additional info where they can (Corrie84 is one) but otherwise people here are all volunteers.    Writing here will simply not achieve anything as we volunteers are powerless to do more than we do.

You have two options.   Take the item to an Apple dealer and have it formally tested.   There is usually no charge for this.   And / or write to Apple product feedback though you are unlikely to get a response.

Remember, as volunteers, there may not be anyone with expertise with your problem looking in at the time you write.
