Q: After El Capitan upgrade, Canon Pixma printer not visible on network

I've seen a lot of smart questions and answers about an evident incompatibility between El Capitan and Canon's Pixma printers, so I'll start mine by saying that I've read everything and tried every prescription. My issue is that the two MacBook Pros in my household (mine and my wife's ) can't connect to our Canon Pixma MG7120 via wireless anymore. The printer is signed into the same network as the computers, and even confirms as much, but the computers don't "see" it anymore. One oddity I notice is that no IPv4 or IPv6 addresses show up on the printer's WLAN settings list.

I've spent time chatting with an Xfinity rep, who assures me my modem/router is fine. I've downloaded the latest Canon servers twice, I've wiped the settings from our Macs and tried again…nothing works. By this point the challenge is almost less about the inconvenience and more about the frustration.

Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Unless you can locate an El Capitan compatible printer driver for your model then you are out of luck. This is common for the Pixma line. I checked their Support site and found this driver for El Capitan that is compatible with your model. It may even be found in Apple's package of Canon printer drivers. Also, see Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac and Canon Printer Drivers.

This seems odd that the printer would show as being connected to the wireless access point (router) but does not show what IP address it has obtained.

Do you have the printed LAN settings list? If not, could you print this as it will confirm the acquired IP address and has additional settings on the report that can answer future questions I may have. Then on the printed Network Configuration Page you will see an entry for Wireless LAN and Wired LAN. Is Wireless LAN showing as Enabled and the Connection as Active?

If it is but no IPv4 or IPv6 address is listed then, as a test, I would try connecting an Ethernet cable from the printer to the router (assuming the router has a spare Ethernet port and the MG7120 has an Ethernet port - the MG7160 sold in Australia does). You could then change the LAN settings from Wireless to Wired and then see if the MG acquires an IP address. If it does you could then see if you can add the printer to the Mac and see if you can print.
