Q: Unable to edit playists already on iphone?

I have been unable to connect the playlists on my iphone with the playlists on my itunes. I recently switched computers and reinstalled itunes (I've done this ~5 times now and have never had issues before) and have found that I can create playlists on my laptop, but they won't sync onto my iphone. Similarly, I can see the playlists on my iphone from itunes, but can't edit them in any way. I also have been unable to delete songs from playlists on my phone from both platforms.

Did they move things around with a new version of itunes? I looked through all the setting options on my iphone and itunes and haven't been able to find anything that seems related (other than maybe manual syncing, but it seems like I shouldn't have to do that to edit playlists). I'm running iOS 9.3.2 and itunes 12.4.1.6

iPhone 5c, iOS 9.3.2

    Hello ausernameiguess,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with playlists is not what you expect.

If I understand correctly, you are unable to make edits on playlists in either iTunes on your computer or on your iPhone. Since you have already tried some troubleshooting steps I would start with these steps to narrow down and resolve your issue:

    1. Plug your iPhone into iTunes and unselect the option to sync Music to your iPhone. Click the Apply button in iTunes and finish the syncing process, then eject your iPhone from iTunes.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

    2. Check the Music app on your iPhone that the music has been removed and then restart your computer and your iPhone.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    3. Once you have restarted both devices, connect your iPhone to iTunes and re-check the box to sync Music from iTunes to your iPhone. Then test your playlist issue again.

New and changed playlists are added to iCloud Music Library and appear on all your devices if you’re an Apple Music member or iTunes Match subscriber. If you’re not a member or subscriber, they’re copied to your music library the next time you sync iPhone with your computer.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to do as you suggested, but don't seem to actually have any sync option like you described. I unchecked everything related to syncing and tried anyway, but with no changes. I then tried deleting all my music from the iphone itself, and while it thinks it's been deleted and my computer indicates that there is no music on my iphone, the music is still there (and playable) and no amount of syncing or restarting is changing anything.

I would try restoring, but there's no backup on my computer to restore to.

I also found an option to edit the playlists through itunes (before my computer thought there was no music on my iphone) but selecting that option just displayed a list of all the music on my iphone which I couldn't affect.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for replying and sorry that didn’t work. Let’s try to resolve this a different way:

    1. Eject your iPhone from iTunes and your computer. Then in iTunes edit a playlist or make a new playlist.

Create a playlist - iTunes Help Mac

Create a playlist - iTunes Help Windows

    2. Then plug in your iPhone and sync the playlist over to your iPhone.

Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad - iTunes Help Mac

Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad - iTunes Help Windows

    3. If you're able to sync the playlist, then eject your iPhone and try to edit the playlists on your iPhone and test your issues again. If you're still having issues, you may want to contact AppleCare, as they have more tools and resources to help you.
