unknown error (-50)

Why can't I log in to iTunes and why do I keep getting unknown error (-50)?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that you're getting error -50 when trying to access the iTunes store. I know how important it is to be able to sign into iTunes and make purchases.
This particular error can occur if there's an issue with third-party security software. To resolve this issue please follow the steps in the link below:

If you see 'There was an error downloading your purchased music' when you try to download music from iTunes
