How to use One Thunderbolt Port for 2 Functions

I have a Macbook Air 2011, with One Thunderbolt Port only.

I use it to hook an external monitor through, and I also want to hook it to my Ethernet cable which is not possible since the thunderbolt plug is already taken by the external monitor.

Question: What can I do to use the same Thunderbolt Port for both (the external screen and the ethernet cable)?

Is there such a thing as a "Thunderbolt Splitter"?

Thank you for any help,

Nam

I have the same issue. My Ethernet port suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago and I bought an Ethernet to thunderbolt adaptor which works great. But I also use an external monitor in my office so I can't have both unless I can split the port

The Belkin Express - having trouble finding one for a reasonable price - would probably do it based on comments here, but it seems an elaborate solution. If there were just a simple splitter to create an additional thunderbolt port that would ideal

Does anyone know if this would work and whether there is such a thing

Thanks

Yes!

There are a few manufacturers who make Thunderbolt docks for this very purpose. Belkin is one.

They usually have ethernet, USB, VGA, HDMI and other ports available from a single thunderbolt connection. Apple sells some of these on their website, but you'd likely find them on Amazon etc as well.

Now, be careful though, your Mac supports Thunderbolt (i.e. version1). Some docks may be Thunderbolt 2 only, so you need to ensure you select the right one. Thunderbolt 2 is only on the newer Macs.

Hopefully most will support the standard Thunderbolt port.

You cannot plug an Ethernet Cable into a Thunderbolt port, but you can plug it into an ethernet port leaving your Thunderbolt free so you can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt devices from it. I don't understand why the OP would want to plug ethernet into thunderbolt port, unless they didn't know Thunderbolt could be daisy chained?

EDIT: Never mind I forgot there is no ethernet on MBA. 😐
