Apple ID problems/mishaps?

Here is the whole situation so I do not confuse anyone.

The original Apple ID that was created many years back when I obtained an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, back when I did not have a personal email address so I had to use my father's. When I obtained an iPad 4, I used the same Apple ID (logically, since they were both my devices). Then I obtained an iPhone, since it was still my own, I used the same Apple ID, the same one with my father's personal email address.

Here's where the problem comes in.

Working up to the present, my father now owns an iPhone himself. Since we now own separate devices and I had already created a personal email (but never changed my Apple ID to it until now), I wanted to create separate Apple IDs for my father and his phone and mine. The current Apple ID with all of my previous information and content from way back had my father's email address and name, but I changed all of that already- changing the email address to my own, verifying it, changing the password to one of my own, and changing my name etc and all is well, the new Apple ID has all the saved content and is now under my personal credentials. However, when my father attempts to create an Apple ID with his personal email (the one that was used originally for my Apple ID, but has since been changed and removed), it keeps telling us that this Apple ID is already being used, and to Try Another Apple ID. Even when I go to iforgot.apple.com and enter my father's email address, it tells us that this Apple ID does not exist. It is confusing the **** out of my and any help would be appreciated.

Let me boil down your lengthy post to the points as I understand them:

  • When you arrived on the Apple scene, you started using your father's Apple ID.
  • Later, when you got your own email address, you changed your father's old Apple ID to your email address.
  • You then were able to keep everything that might have been purchased under your father's Apple ID to that time.
  • Now, your father recently acquired an Apple device and is interested in establishing an Apple ID.
  • He expected to use his old Apple ID, as he still maintains that email account. (But this is not possible, as old Apple IDs are never retired. That old address was transitioned to your new Apple ID.)
  • What he can do, then, is pick up a new email address, use that as a brand new Apple ID, and start from scratch in the Apple world. He will, of course, own no music, apps, etc., as you own them.

  • Way back, registered Apple ID for iPod Touch 2 using father's email/info
  • Used same Apple ID for my new iPad then new iPhone
  • Father now owns his own iPhone, would like his own separate Apple ID
  • I attempt to dissociate current Apple ID from father's personal info, changing email, name, password, birth date, security q's etc to my own
  • It works, able to log in with my own new personal credentials
  • Hoped father's personal email was free, iforgot.apple.com shows that his email is not tied to an Apple ID
  • When Father's personal email is used to register new Apple ID, says it already exists

So what your saying is that my father's email was never changed from my Apple iD? That it always stays on my Apple ID but not available as login credentials? And that my father cannot use his own personal email but has to register a new one.

Your father's Apple ID was changed from his old address to yours.

However, your father's old email address has been retired from the Apple ID roster and cannot be re-used.

It's just like getting a personalized license plate for an automobile, selling the car, and getting rid of the plate. Most places would then retire the personalization, never allowing its use again.

Is the error message that "this Apple ID is already being used" or "this email address is already in use"?

Those are not the same things.

If you sign in to applied.apple.com with your "new" Apple ID, looking at the Account section... do you see his email address listed as a rescue mail for you? As one of your "reachable" at email addresses?

Ah. I see. So there's no way out of this except for my father to create an entirely new personal email and then create his ID with that. 😟
