Q: Difficulty and problems with "Erase your device with recovery mode." Lost passcode.

Hi,

Thanks for reviewing this topic.  I'm using an iPad 2, think 16gb, not sure on the iOS and etc.

Anyways, I added a passcode to the iPad and didn't use it for a couple of days and thus promptly forgot the code.  Have had it backed up to iTunes previously and so started to work through the steps listed on the support page from Apple with the title: "If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled."  Started with the part for users who have backed up to iTunes previously.  iTunes asked me, however, if I wanted to trust the iPad and then to respond as well on the iPad device.  I never saw anything to respond to and figured that I needed to enter the passcode in order to be able to respond, so I moved on to the next steps with the subtitle: "Erase your device with recovery mode."

Now, I got the iPad to enter recovery mode and got iTunes to start downloading the software update.  But what seems to be happening is that the iPad exits recovery mode after 15 minutes (as per the instructions) and then iTunes stops downloading the content.  I keep re-trying the process, but iTunes appears to start over with the download process.  Since the estimated time of the download is much more than the prescribed 15 minutes, how in the world am I ever supposed to make this work?  It seems like one solution might be to download the latest iOS so that iTunes can have it ready to go when I try to recover the iPad.  Is this possible?  Occasionally I was getting a network time-out error, too, but I don't remember the code.  It might have been (9006).  I'll re-post if I get the error again and it's a different number.

    You have an internet/connectivity issue.

Try another "place" meaning network. This may mean another PC running iTunes in another physical location.

If you are near an Apple Retail Store, they typically will provide you a system on their network for resetting passcode locks. I suggest an appointment.

    Hi LACAllen

Thanks for the reply.  I'll see what I can do, but I'm actually on one of the fastest and most reliable networks in my area.  Actually, I already know that part of my question is a network connectivity problem, but it is not necessarily my problem, it's about Apple's arbitrary expectation that I can simply download a 1.3 GB file in something less than 15 minutes.  My download speed currently is about 2.45 Mbps on an H+ network (3G plus). Gets the job done for e-mails and uploads and downloads which don't time out, but, trying to get this done in Apple's 15 minute time period limit is simply ridiculous.  The DSL around here runs at about the same speed.  Not sure that I can just go somewhere else to get a better connection.  I calculate it will take, if I can maintain the connection, over an hour and 15 minutes to get done what Apple predicts will only take 15 minutes.

Is there any way I can get this process done without the 15 minute time limit?  Or am I not understanding the 15 minute time limit?  That is, if I have a stable connection, will iTunes and the iPad ignore this 15 minute time limit?

By the way, I'm nowhere near an Apple store and won't be for at least another 24 months.

You are not completely understanding the 15 minute time limit. If you accidentally place a device into Recovery mode, it should release itself from Recovery Mode after 15 minutes. However, if you intentionally place a device into Recovery Mode while connected to the computer and iTunes and begin the recovery via iTunes, there is no 15 minute time session. If you successfully placed the device into Recovery Mode and began the restore, the device should continue, no matter what. Like LACAllen, I believe the problem to be a network issue and disturbance in your internet connection. You can take a look at this support document, Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support and take a look at information about network disconnects, as well as anti-virus software issues. You can also take a look at this support document with information if you continue to have issues with restoring. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Sorry... that slow a network will not be able to get this done for you I'm afraid.

There is no "download and install later" option for folks with very slow networks like yourself.

Hmm.  Well, that's unfortunate.  I'm disappointed to hear Apple is living in a post-DSL world already.  Makes it kinda difficult on people who don't have a faster connection.  Will keep trying.  Thanks!
