Q: my macbook is telling me that my startup disc is full what do I do to empty it

My MACBOOK keeps displaying "start up disk is full".  I have looked at multiple searches regarding how to rectify the problem without luck.  The response I got on apples support page was only relevant if you spoke martian.  Can anyone help with step by step layman terms please

You have a lot of files on your hard drive. To free up some space, first of all empty your Trash, clear Out Downloads and Desktop. Also you can clean up Music, Apps and Pictures.
