Q: No brightness control when using external monitor

Love my Macbook 12" (2015), but I don't seem to have any brightness control on my external 27" LED Cinema Display (non-Thunderbolt).

I purchased a Mini DisplayPort-to-USB-C adapter and also a hub for connecting an external hard drive and/or other standard USB peripherals. The hub has its own USB-C port, which allows me to charge while working or use other USB-C adapters.

The Mini DisplayPort adapter works fine if I plug the monitor directly into the adapter and the adapter into the Macbook. No issues there. The monitor comes up at high resolution with no flickering or any other quirks. Simply looks great!

But the Mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter does NOT work if I use it with the hub. The external monitor doesn't appear. This means I have no way of connecting BOTH the monitor's Mini DisplayPort AND USB connection at the same time .... hence, no brightness control on the external monitor.

Any suggestions? Could I have purchased a malfunctioning or poorly designed Mini DisplayPort-to-USB-C adapter? Has anyone else had a brightness control issue when using an external monitor with the MacBook?
