Your hard drive is failing/failed. Backup your data now, then replace the disk.

You might try an erase & install. Also it will erase the Avast, which is practically malware itself.

EDIT: You've also installed CleanMyMac which is one of the worst things you can do for a Mac. Both these softwares can bork your entire system.

You may need to use the DVDs that shipped with your system, do you still have them?

I think i have. But I'm now away from home, where i stored it. Any other solution? Is it still possible to use the mac for some time in this situation? btw, i think i have uninstalled the Avast before, and i can't find it now either. is it still inside the mac?

Your hard drive appears to be failing. You haven’t set up TimeMachine so if you have not been using any other type of drive backup software before doing anything purchase an external hard drive and back up the computer. Your data is at risk! Here’s Apple’s instructions: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support Due to the way TimeMachine works, assuming you want to keep using TimeMachine to back up your computer (and you really really do!) I recommend that you purchase a drive that is 2-3 times larger than the data you are backing up. In other words, if your computer is using 250GB of space now, your backup drive should be no smaller than 500GB.

Yes, it hasn't been completely uninstalled but an erase and install will wipe the entire disk. In your case, I wouldn't bother trying to uninstall Macpaw or Avast.

Also you may want to consider a clone as a backup because if your disk fails completely you will have a bootable backup to work from while you fix it. You can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.

You are welcome. Whatever you do, keep your data backed up daily if not, when the drive fails you will be out of luck.

Let us know if you need more help with any of the processes recommended.
