Q: Cannot share from timeline because item is "still referencing media on the camera." FCP had no problem sharing these files yesterday.

Can't share clips from timeline.

Imported media into an event, edited in timeline and shared (to default, master file), without a hitch, yesterday.

Today I can't share because item "is still referencing media on camera."

I went back to the clips I successfully shared yesterday and the same problem; I can't share them today.

There's only one reason: the clip's media cannot be located.

You may have failed to completely import the media (and had the camera attached yesterday), your media is on a drive that is longer attached, or you have somehow deleted the media.

Select the clip and then "show in finder'" and tell us what happens.

I selected the clip; it appears in the timeline, plays and displays in the viewer. In the file menu, "reveal in finder" is greyed out.

Create a new library, and import the problematic clips into the new library. Once that's complete, copy the clips from the new library to your original one.

You can't reveal in Finder from the timeline. Only from the browser. Shift-F to get to the browser clip.

James, this suggestion assumes the original media, from the camera, can be located and then reimported, does it not? Will not simply hooking the camera back up solve the problems of the missing media that is still being referenced?

Reveal in finder tells me the clip is 1920x1080, 1080pHD and so on.

Creating a new library? I can create an event, or a project, but a new library? FCP help is silent on this.

I'm using FCP 10.0.8, and it doesn't give me this option. New event, and New project, but not new library.

No libraries in the early versions. have you tried File>Import>Reimport from camera? If that doesn't work, with the camera or card connected try sharing. Dont think there's anything else that will work with that version.

Problem solved. Early on I had imported the recalcitrant files a second time (shoulda used "reimport", but anyway...).

Result was I had "good" files and "bad" files in the event. When I found I could sort them out using the icon that's visible in the browser I put together a sequence of only "good" clips on the timeline and was able to share without any problems. Thanks for all the suggestions, they helped me think this through.
