Bogus back worm virus alert or not?

My wife opened an email from a friend of her's and after she closed it she got a virus alert. It said we had a back worm virus and needed to download an app from mackeeper.com. Is this for real? There were no downloads in the email.

The bottom line is there is nothing that can arbitrarily scan your computer over the internet. You would have to specifically give them access to your Mac, allow them to install software on your Mac, and run the program which transmitted the results back to them. So, anything that pops up saying you are infected, unoptimized, unclean, or anything else is always a scam.
