Find the iTunes Media folder

By default, your iTunes Media folder is in your iTunes folder:

  • Mac: Finder > username > Music
  • Windows Vista or later:
    \Users\username\Music\
  • Windows XP:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

If the folder isn't in its default location, you can find where it's located using these steps:

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Mac: From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Hold down the Control and B keys on your keyboard to open the iTunes menu bar, then choose Edit > Preferences. Learn more about menus in iTunes for Windows.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
    User uploaded file
  4. Look in the box under "iTunes Media folder location" for the location of your iTunes Media folder.

Consolidate your iTunes library

Before you make a backup of your iTunes files, consolidate all of your media into the iTunes Media folder. To consolidate your media:

  1. Open iTunes.
Mac: From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Library > Organize Library.
Windows: Hold down the Control and B keys on your keyboard to open the iTunes menu bar, then choose File > Library > Organize Library. Learn more about menus in iTunes for Windows.
  2. Select "Consolidate files."

To consolidate files simply means that you will store all files in the configured iTunes media folder on your computer. For example, now you may have music located all over your hard drive instead of having it nicely organized in one folder with various subfolders. If your music is all over your hard drive, making a backup is difficult, because you would have to look for each and every music file. If you consolidate your files, you will have all music files nicely together, making it easy to backup to a USB drive for example. Make sure to backup your whole iTunes media folder, not just your music files, so that you can later always import it again on a computer.
