Macbook (running 10.6.8) only works in safe boot? What's wrong?

I woke my MacBook up from sleep mode when I suddenly got a kernel panic.

After shutting down and restarting my computer regular boot, the MacBook will function past the grey apple screen,

but after that, it freezes on a blank grey screen and refuses to go to the login window.

However, on a safe boot, the MacBook starts up as it normally should.

I was able to restore my MacBook to 10.6.3 and after that, it started on a regular boot,

but after using the built-in Software Update to upgrade to Mac 10.6.8, the same problem returned.

My Macbook will only boot in safe boot, again.

I've tried:
- Resetting the SMC

- Resetting the PRAM

- Attempting to use Disk Utility but the "Repair Disk" button's greyed out.

Is there any solution to this problem?

OK, that's probably why the repair disk option is greyed out. The disk can't be repaired while it's in use.

Before you proceed, first make sure you have a backup of your data. You may need to re-install OS X, and you don't want to lose your files.

Once you have a backup, you need to boot the Mac from the OS X DVD. Insert DVD 1, shutdown then boot up and hold the "C" key right after you hear the startup tone. Let go once the Apple logo appears.

It will take a few minutes, but it should boot from the DVD and then you'll be able to run Disk Utility from the DVD and check & repair the disk.

If it repairs it successfully then hopefully everything will be fine. If it gives any errors post them back here.

Cheers

I suspect it could be failing hardware.

You have already erased & reinstalled 10.6.3 & upgraded it so I don't think it is a disk issue (the installer should have failed if that was the case). Installing 10.6.3 would be impossible when 10.6.8 was installed on the disk, so you must have erased the disk - please confirm this is correct.

If you have a bootable backup try starting up from that to see if there is any difference.

You can try verbose boot to see if any messages are printed to the screen when it fails… You may need to record the screen via a camera, the messages can fly by too fast sometimes.

How to start up your Mac in single-user or verbose mode - Apple Support

What model is it?

Apple Menu > About this Mac will state that info.

You can try Apple hardware test…

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

If the 'hold D at boot' fails you will need to find the original grey install disks to run AHT (one disk has the AHT instructions printed on it).

Run the extended & standard test in loop mode – hit cmd+L to enable that. Capture any error codes that appear.
