Any non-Apple app that I try to launch on my Apple TV just gives me a blank, gray screen. I've tried HBOGo, Netflix, YouTube, etc. The Apple apps seem to open just fine (iTunes Movies, iTunes TV, App Store).
I've tried closing the apps and restarting Apple TV -- no luck. Only advice I can find is to delete and re-download the apps or contact the service providers of the apps, but why would NONE of the third-party apps work?

I had the same problem. None of the apps from the App Store would run, however, only Apple supplied apps would. Resetting the system did no good, my network was OK. This had happened before and I did a reset and had to download all my apps again a reconfigure...a real pain. This time, as mentioned in this string, go to the App Store to download a FREE app. Once completed, all other apps on your TV should again run.
Does deleting the apps and redownloading them help?
Try the following steps for the Apple TV 4, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Might be a version conflict. Have you updated tvOS to the latest 9.2.1? See Settings>General>About to confirm.
I found the answer on another site. Go to the ATV App store and download some free app. That seems to reset your connection to the App Store so that your account is "re-validated" there. Another suggestion was to search for the app you're trying to open and use the "open" button for it in the App Store. However, the first technique worked for me -- got ALL 3rd party apps so they'd launch as before -- so I didn't need to try the second method.
