Q: Brand New iMac, don's see iDVD in the App Store, Still Available?

Hello,

My ten year-old iMac finally died a few months ago, and this past weekend I finally got a new iMAC. The main things I used my iMAC for, and want to use the new one for, are photos, movies and making DVDs from my travels. I haven't keep up with iLife, but it seems like iDVD isn't available anymore, same with iPhoto. I could sure use an update on what my options are.

Thanks in Advance

iDVD was never available from the Mac App Store(but can be gotten from iLife DVDs), and iPhoto was replaced by Photos, which is bundled with 10.10.3 and newer.

So if I have the DVDs, I think I still do, I just load it from there?

How do I handle all my (I have three) old iPhoto libraries.

    1. If you have an iLife install DVD or a backup which contains it, install it from there.

    2. Launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose each.

I'm pretty sure I do have, at home, iLife 11 DVDs. So that will work with the OS on a brand new iMac?

Photos can read an iPhoto library?

Can time machine just recover a single app like iDVD?

Sorry, I'm just a bit rusty here.

iDVD has been discontinued and unsupported for a couple of years now.   If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

    Pacifist001.jpg

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Thanks for all the great information. I found my iLife install DVD. It's for iLIfe 11.

iDVD and iPhoto installed. iDVD works fine (and I don't mind so much not have the older themes).

iPhoto won't run and asked to be updated. But when I try to update via the app store, it claims my user ID does;t have the right or I was issued a refund, Nither of those are true. I certainly use to update it on my older iMac. It was a valid iLife 11 I purchased from Amazon.

I much prefer iPhoto to Photos and have a few large older iPhoto libraries I want to access.

Would you recommend I purchase iLife '09 to get around the app store issue, or try to contact Apple support to see why they think my id hasn't got that proper update privileges?

It isn’t possible to update the DVD version of iLife from the Mac App Store. If you didn’t previously get the Mac App Store version of iPhoto, or associate an OEM one with it(this could previously be done with DVD versions, but is now only possible if you have a Mac that came with it and Mac OS X 10.7 or newer), you need to either switch to Photos or ask the Mac App Store staff to give you a download code for it.
