Q: Why cant I access my own files?

Why am I unable to access my own files on apple music?

I was so elated to hear about apple music, I have 400+ gigs of music and I was so excited that I could access all of it off the cloud.

I am frustrated because that doesn't seem to be the case.  Many of the artists and albums apple music has greyed out and are unaccessible.  Some of the music that I can access are not the files that I uploaded onto the cloud.  For instance some studio albums I have listened to hundreds of times are now live recorded versions through apple music.

I am VERY unhappy with this service because it took a lot of time to upload to the cloud, and dick around with my phone...  and in the end I feel the service was misrepresented.

I don't have access to *MY* files that *I* uploaded to the cloud.  I was under the impression that was why I was uploading them was so that I could access a duplicate of *THE VERY SAME FILE*  I had uploaded.

My hope is that someone at apple sees this, and recognizes that with each new ****-poor product introduced loyal mac customers (since the early 90's) will be less and less inclined to pay the absurd price tag apple is throwing on technology that doesn't live up to the brand hype.

    Apple Music does require iCloud.

To add songs, albums and playlists from Apple Music to My Music, make sure to turn on iCloud Music Library on your device.

I understand your frustration, I think part of it stems from what appears to be your misunderstanding of what Apple Music is.

Apple Music does not upload your music files - it uploads the metadata & matches that with files that are in the store. This means if your tagged files 'kinda, sorta match' something similar in the store you can get a different version when you redownload via Apple music.

Large libraries with custom & obscure live versions can cause this kind of issue.

You appear to be confusing Apple Music with 'iTunes match'. That service will upload your files if they are not found in the store. The system is confusing & can be a mine field if you have a carefully curated & tagged library.

I don't have a solution for you, besides reading the various help posts on iMore.com etc. There are a few good guides & ideas to help you get the most out of Apple music…

Ultimately the best solution may be to restore your files from a backup before it got replaced.

Obviously it requires iCloud.  I get that I need access to wifi.  This is not a user error issue.  It is the fact that most of my music is inaccessible whether connected to iCloud or not.  Most are obscure bands...  The other issue are that many files that I can access are not the same as what I had uploaded.
