So the Podcast app shows up in iTunes under the update tab. However, when I click on download, I get an error message with:
Podcasts is only available on iOS.
To get Podcasts, search for it on the App Store on your iOS device.
which, of course is a meaningless message because Podcasts doesn't show up in the App Store search.
Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

The alert is an error. You can keep ignoring it, or delete the Podcasts app from iTunes. This will not affect the app on your device.
This seems to have fixed it. Not sure how the Podcast app got into My App on iTunes in the first place, but the error has now gone when updating all apps in iTunes where the Podcast app was showing as needing an update.

Are you saying that there was no July update for the Podcast app? Won't deleting the app from iTunes remove it from my phone?

The Podcasts app update v2.4 is not designed for ios 9.3.3
I tried to update in iTunes from v2.2:
Failed: Got "Podcasts is only available on iOS".
Failed: ios App Store show no update
Deleted app from OSX iTunes to try to reinstall but...
Search in iTunes App Store:
Failed: Get/Download button is grayed out.
Google "Podcasts app ios" at /itunes.com/ link it says:

Luckily, deleting the Podcasts app from iTunes does not delete Podcasts app from ios device.
Luckily, finding Podcasts 2.2.ipa in OSX Trash and double clicking allows adding it back to iTunes.
Luckily, one cannot manually delete the ios app (no X when in shaky mode).
Apple has re-upped the borkedness of the Podcasts app with this "nupdate".
Anyone else unable to download the July 2016 update?
