Q: iWeb problem on new iMac w/ El Capitan

I just got a new iMac with El Capitan.  I uploaded iWeb from iLife '09 and downloaded the update and it worked.  I then tried to open up the domain from an external drive that I had from my previous computer and all it would do is open up iWeb and nothing came up.  I tried going to to library/application support and there was no iWeb folder where I should have been able to drop in my previous domain from the external drive.  Does anyone know how to remedy this?

Have tried to create the folder for iWeb in Application Support manually?

I did but that didn't work.  However, I found the solution!

When I went into Finder, I would try "Go To Folder", try the library and application support and iWeb wouldn't be there.  I then was scrolling through threads about iWeb issues and found one to hold the "alt" key once under the "Go" menu.  "Library" showed up, opened up Application Support and there was iWeb!  I was then able to drag in the domain from the external drive and it worked!

    Thanks!

That explains it. You have probably looked in a different Library folder, the one at the top level of the system drive, where the system installs items to be used by all users.

The Go menu with options key held down is showing you the correct library folder in your Home folder. This folder is hidden by default.  You can make your user library permanently visible on El Capitan:

To reveal the hidden User Library permanently:

    • Bring the Finder forward by clicking on the Desktop or the Finder icon in the Dock.
    • Select your user/home folder (with the house icon in the Finder sidebar)
    • With that Finder window as the front window, press the key combination ⌘J to bring up the View options.
    • In the View options panel enable ’Show Library Folder’. That will make your user library folder visible in your Home folder.

The reason there was no iWeb folder there was because you went to the wrong library folder - you went to the System Library and the iWeb folder is stored in your User Library, so in El Capitan you need to click on the Go menu item and then click the alt key and your User Library should show up and the iWeb folder is there.  Try placing your domain.sites file there and double clicking it and it should open in iWeb.

Other than this, if iWeb won't work with El Capitan, then perhaps consider downgrading your OSX back to Yosemite, so that iWeb will work or look into the alternatives out there and re-build your site using supported software - there are lots of alternatives including EverWeb, Flux, Wix, Wordpress.com, WebAcappella and Freeway Pro/Express, Adobe Muse.

    Check them out and see.
