Q: I've made a right mess of my Time Capsule setup, could someone help me please ?

Hi,

I've just bought a brand new 3TB time capsule from the Apple Store.

All I want it to do is act as a backup device for my two iMac's (all software patched up to latest releases) and iPad/phone.  I don't need it to be a wireless internet access point.

I've plugged it in, connected it to both my iMac's with ethernet cables, ran the setup via the Airport utility on one of the iMac's, skipped the bit about connecting it to my broadband router (as it says you can), then turned on time machine.

The first backup ran as expected.

However, even though the iMac's are connected to my wireless routers, they cannot access the internet unless I unplug the Time Capsule ethernet cables, and then of course Time Machine wont work.

If any one could offer any advice I'd be very very grateful.

I'd be happy to start again right form the beginning.

Thanks in anticipation

Nic

The issue is that your iMac cannot be connected to two networks at the same time, and it is in this configuration. In order to resolve this, you need to connect the iMac to a single network.

What is the make & model of your other wireless router or gateway? It should be possible to configure both for a roaming type network so that you can do what you are looking for. That is, having the iMac have the ability to both perform Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule (TC) and access the Internet simultaneously.
