Q: Partition Not Appearing

(MacBook Air, El-Capitan)

I just recently used Windows Boot Camp to create a partition and make Windows 10 useable on my iMac...

I decided to do it to my MacBook Air, and it worked, until I discovered that the new - Windows - partition would not appear while setting up windows. Now I have a 128 GB hard dive with only 60 GB of useable space.

I checked out Disk Utility, it showed that my 128 GB hard drive had ONE partition that consisted of 60 GB OF SPACE.

Please Help

Okay I've got a drive on the way to my house right now with plenty of space on it.

I'll come back when I've backed everything up.

Are there some first steps after backing up that I can do before I come back to you?

Most the work for rebuilding the CS LV/LVG will need to be done in Internet Recovery using Terminal.

Here is an example - Re: Loner: "Your disk could not be partitioned" error. Please help .

Can you post a Text version of diskutil cs list output? It will make it much easier to work with. You will need to boot into Internet Recovery after you post the text version.

    Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R).

    1. Delete the CS LV - diskutil cs deleteVolume 115ED14D-A8C4-496D-8D3D-B7CAEB284B01

    2. Delete the CS LVG - diskutil cs delete 161F0300-860A-4493-833A-C00320582AFA

    3. Erase the SSD - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ SSD disk0

    4. Erase the HDD - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ HDD disk2 (please ensure this is your 3TB disk. It could be different). If you need to reboot to renumber disk2 to disk1, ensure you use Command+Opt+R to go back to Internet Recovery.

    5. Re-create the CS LVG - diskutil cs create OSX-Macintosh-LVG disk0s2 disk1s2 (please ensure the SSD disk is first, otherwise you will have bad performance). Use disk2, if necessary. The HDD must always be second.

    7. Re-create the CS LV - diskutil cs createVolume TheLongStringFromStep5 jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" 100%

    8. Restore OSX from TM Backup.

    9. Retry your Windows installation using BC Assistant.

Okay I'm on step 4 currently. I'm trying to verify that disk2 is my 3TB disk.

This is what comes up with "diskutil list" (apologies for the picture instead of text):

It seems as though the 3TB disk is disk0 but I just erased that in the previous step.

We want to erase both the HDD and SSD part of the Fusion drive, so it is fine.

Given your picture, step 4 will become... (disk1s2 is SSD - 121 GB, disk0s2 is the 3TB HDD part).

    diskutil cs create OSX-Macintosh-LVG disk1s2 disk0s2

Please run this command, and then post the output of

    diskutil cs list

This looks fine. Please run the createVolume step (It is numbered 7 but should be 6 ).

The Long string to use is 8B104F25... as shown on the "Logical Volume Group" line in your output.

I tried to recover from Time Machine backup and it said "An error occurred when trying to create a recovery drive" and it made me restart.

I'm now back into Internet Recovery Mode. Should I just try restoring from Time Machine again?

Yes. If you get an error, install OSX in Internet Recovery and then restore TM backup.

    Just an update.

I installed OSX and it happened to only give me an option to reinstall Mavericks so I did that.

Then I had to upgrade to OSX El Capitan.

Now I'm restoring the TM Backup. It's got about 6 hours to go.
