How can I connect to my first gen iPod touch with a new MBP

What the **** Apple? Ive had to use Chrome to write this question - the forum is not working properly on Safari?

Anyway - I have a new MBP, and a first gen iPod touch given to me.

You would assume that it would simply plug in and play. Wrong.

Next step, I see a discussion that says you can update the OS via iTunes to 3.1.1 ( I think ). So I tried, iTunes goes through the motions, says there is a fee of £2.50 or something, then goes to download the OS and as its about to download, comes up with a nil return from server.

Anyone have any ideas? I cannot see the thing in iTunes connected via a USB - it says the device failed to respond...

I have tried this and I can clearly see the device in the USB device tree. It has no symbols next to it.

Weirdly the device does connect to Photos, you can see the device in the top bar. I dont have anything on the iPod to test, but it doesnt help much anyway.

I tried completely resetting the device back to factory, without any result.

Also tried connecting to itunes in the device, and it doesnt connect.

It seems to me that the device is not recognised by my MBP version of itunes, and it should. Somehow the driver has been dropped.

I managed to progress this. I did as follows.

Attached the iPod to an older MacBook. This recognised the iPod in iTunes. After several attempts to access the iPod I managed to uninstall the OS in DFU mode and then managed to re-install 3.1.3.

This now allows me to access the iPod on my new MBP.

However there are still problems. The backup does not take place, although its quite happy to sync. I guess thats the major point of using the thing in many ways so you can put content on it.

Ive also noticed that the wi-fi signal is weak, you cannot just wander round the house with it, you need to be closer to the router. I wonder if this is down to the age of the thing, rather than deteriorating performance.

It also makes me wonder how well some Apple tech stands the test of time. I have a Compact and a candy iMac, both of which work well. Im not sure about these mobile devices though - will they still work as well in thirty years.
