OSX becoming unresponsive and then getting back to responsive after a few minutes

I know that there are other discussions about this issue, but I'm posting anyway as most of the threads seem to point to Safari as the culprit, while I think it's more like a drivers problem.

I have 21.5" late 2012 iMac running OSX El Capitan 10.11.5.

I noticed that it randomly becomes unresponsive by slowing down quickly until all programs become stuck, but the mouse cursor is still moving and the screensaver does kick in after a while and I can get out of it by moving the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard.

If I wait for minutes (10-15 minutes usually) it becomes responsive again.

I tried looking at the console log but it looks like everything hangs and then just comes back to life and nothing gets written to the log in the meanwhile.

My suspect is that it's either a graphics card or bluetooth issue, but definitely something wrong with some driver because the same version of OSX on different hardware doesn't suffer from this issue.

It becomes more evident when you have Chrome with many tabs opened and Parallels with a VM running at the same time.

I have been trying to nail this down with different tools, but since everything becomes unresponsive, even diagnostic tools running on that same box are of no use as they just halt and recover like every other process without even noticing the time gap in between.

Is there anyone who has any clue at how to debug this issue, either with external hardware or any other mean?

Cheers!

The iMac has 16Gb of RAM. I tried giving the VM both a high and a low amount of RAM but it didn't make any difference regarding this issue.

The free space is usually ranging between 20-30Gb on a 1Tb hybrid drive.

This list indeed is very specific. Fusion drive. Besides the the issue your mac needs some cleaning.

First of all you have enough Ram, solving the issue wil prove that.

I go through the list first:

-- why do you have two different Virtualizers (Parallels and Virtualbox)

-- did you yourself edit the Hosts file, or do you have or had hacked software apps? If so, are you sure you do need it?

-- there is some software that is not really compatible or is terminated (Picasa, Flip4Mac, MagicMenu, Roxio....)

-- there is some software incompatible (for the moment): Wacom

OK here we go:

1. SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove ALL entries, with the minus sign underneath, this does not uninstall anything, just preventing the software to run always after a startup.

RESTART after this.

2. do not use both Virtualizers at the same time, that can eat a lot of Ram. Quit once you stop using it. Decide which one you want to use and uninstall the other one. You can have more than one VM in a virtualizer.

3. Uninstall CleanMyMac !!!

4. - Uninstall all tools that don't do anything for you: MagicMenu, Alfred, Flamingo, Xmarks, iStatmenus.

- Uninstall intelhaxm, Roxio/Toast, Valve software, Android File Transfer, Screenflow.

5. I am not familiar with: Altralogica, LeapMotion, Homebrew, Flamingo, Trapsmonitor: stop using them for the time being.

6. Uninstall all user applets in SystemPreferences, except Flashplayer (you have to update it); you can install the correct Java later when you really need it, You probably also do not need the NTFS driver.

7. Delete all InternetPlug-ins, except: the 2 updated Flashplayer plugins, the QuickTime plugin, the JavaAppletPlugin.

Now RESTART.

See what happens.

Make a new etrecheck list.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I don't understand what you mean. I realize that it is a FusionDrive, but that may even make it worse. 17.63GB free space is just not enough for the system to work properly. We can't even ascertain as to where this space is. It may be partly in the ssd, partly in the hd.

And yes, there is a lot of rubbish in there too.

Jul 14, 2016 3:35 AM in response to Lexiepex

Thank you so much for the very detailed reply. I'm answering your questions and commenting in line down here:

This list indeed is very specific. Fusion drive. Besides the the issue your mac needs some cleaning.

What's so problematic with Fusion drives? Is it because of the low disk space or is there something else I'm not aware of?

-- why do you have two different Virtualizers (Parallels and Virtualbox)

This is a development box and I am running some Windows VM with Parallels that has better performances, but I'm also working with Docker and GenyMotion that are tools that require VirtualBox to run their VMs, so I have to use both worlds. I usually try not to have both running at the same time if I can avoid that, though.

-- did you yourself edit the Hosts file, or do you have or had hacked software apps? If so, are you sure you do need it?

I do have entries in my hosts file to map domain names to my local web server when developing. That's perfectly fine.

-- there is some software that is not really compatible or is terminated (Picasa, Flip4Mac, MagicMenu, Roxio....)

I should have managed to remove all of those. Please keep in mind that this box comes from a 2009 Mac Mini that I kept upgrading and moving from one Mac to the next, so it's still got some old stuff installed back then.

-- there is some software incompatible (for the moment): Wacom

I've updated the drivers to the latest today, just to be safe.

1. SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove ALL entries, with the minus sign underneath, this does not uninstall anything, just preventing the software to run always after a startup.

RESTART after this.

I've removed some, but not all of them. I do use Alfred, Dropbox and Flamingo daily.

2. do not use both Virtualizers at the same time, that can eat a lot of Ram. Quit once you stop using it. Decide which one you want to use and uninstall the other one. You can have more than one VM in a virtualizer.

I think I answered that up there. I can't keep just one of them. I need both worlds at the same time.

3. Uninstall CleanMyMac !!!

Done!

4. - Uninstall all tools that don't do anything for you: MagicMenu, Alfred, Flamingo, Xmarks, iStatmenus.

I removed MagicMenu and Xmarks. I kept Alfred, Flamingo and iStatsMenu as I use them. I updated all of them to the latest version available, just to be safe.

- Uninstall intelhaxm, Roxio/Toast, Valve software, Android File Transfer, Screenflow.

intelhaxm is needed to work with the Android emulator if I don't want to use the non hardware accelerated version. And I do that daily, so I cannot remove it. I have to live with that.

I removed all Roxio/Toast stuff.

Valve software is the Steam client.. I have it running on all my other Macs as well and it doesn't look like it can be troublesome. I might remove it eventually just to see if anything changes.

Android File Transfer is needed as well for work.

I use Screenflow to capture videos of the apps I'm working on so I cannot remove it.

5. I am not familiar with: Altralogica, LeapMotion, Homebrew, Flamingo, Trapsmonitor: stop using them for the time being.

The Altralogica stuff is software I develop. I removed Trapsmonitor which is part of the HP printer drivers and left the rest there as I use them on a daily basis. (Flamingo is a Google Talk desktop client, Homebrew is a package manager and LeapMotion is the software of the homonymous hardware device to control a software by waving hands in the air... and yes, I do use it for work when I develop applications for that device)

6. Uninstall all user applets in SystemPreferences, except Flashplayer (you have to update it); you can install the correct Java later when you really need it, You probably also do not need the NTFS driver.

I removed all I could but I kept Java as I need it for all my development needs and the NTFS driver as I do attach external Windows formatted drives to this Mac.

7. Delete all InternetPlug-ins, except: the 2 updated Flashplayer plugins, the QuickTime plugin, the JavaAppletPlugin.

Now RESTART.

Done.

At the time I'm writing this it's not yet hanged, but I have rebooted just a few minutes ago so that's no real indication that it's back to working fine. I'll keep you posted.

Your system is still RAM-starved (note the number of processes killed due to insufficient RAM).

By deleting some stuff you now have around 50GB of 1.1TB free disk space. A little better, but still below the 10-15% that is usually recommended.

You still have an enormous number of launch agents, launch daemons and login items. I'd try and see which of those are really necessary and cut back on those that are just remnants of the past and no longer needed.

Jul 14, 2016 4:25 AM in response to tanis2000

1. Fusion drive is different and takes more resources for a little less money than a "full" size SSD.

it can be troublesome some times to correct issues.

2. Parallels and Virtualbox: you decide, but avoid both running at the same time.

3. CleanMyMac, gone, great

Hosts file: OK you know why and what you do.

4. your choice but make sure that you have the latest compatible versions.

5. Yes, OK. HP Trapsmonitor should not be there, good show.

6. OK, good work.

7. You can read NTFS drives without the NTFS driver, but you need that driver to write.

You did good (I accept your choices, your show) and now the etrecheck show good behaviour.

- Google Chrome is using a lot of resources, try to restart the mac as often as is possible. and avoid Chrome (if possible)

- 60MB page-outs in an hour is not very much. You can check the Ram efficiency and Ram pressure in ActivityMonitor: keep an eye on it. You have already 16GB of Ram which is the max for this iMac. So avoid running VB and PD running together and the same for the browsers.

And I repeat my wish to get rid of the no added value apps like Alfred etc etc.

Have fun

Lex
