How do I remove a Trojan virus

I opened up Safari and straight away it started by a loading screen with a pop up window and a voice saying 'please contact this number' I forced quit Safari straight away and did an anti virus scan and it came up with 7 viruses - namely VBA:Downloader-AOV, others were the same but different three letters. Does anyone know how to remove these trojan viruses. The work computer uses AVAST for mac as the anti virus, and I'm not sure how you remove them.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Please read Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages.

The work computer uses AVAST for mac as the anti virus,

It will not work properly as long as "Avast" remains installed. Uninstall it using its uninstaller, which will remove it completely. Do not use any other procedure or utility to remove it.

The presence of viruses which tend to be for Windows computers and won't affect a Mac (unless you run Windows on it), and the message you are seeing, may be unrelated so you have two issues. Use ClamXAV to deal with the Windows things, check https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/ for your computer. Edit: It looks like Malwarebytes requires OSX 10.8 or greater.

so far none of the steps have worked. There is no apple at the top/left, Safari & Sys Preferences shut down immediately, no icons on desktop, no way to trash. No way to get to applications.

The admin. user is fine, the 2ndary user is infected. Tried running clamX on the admin HD, no luck. Will try downloading the Malware app also.

would appreciate any other suggestions. Is it possible to just wipe out the 2ndary user? and just put them in again without wiping out the entire HD?[including the admin]?

thanks

thanks Niel, but

I did delete the user. I had a guest user that I deleted as well. I rebooted, and put in a new 2ndary user, the same problems occurred, This is something very strange. When you log into the 2ndary, things look fine, then start to get weird fast, the Finder crashes/blinks on/off, same with Safari, Sys Pref. -- all crash immediately, so i can't even open any anti-virus app

but i checked today, there is a Guest User-- which I cannot delete/the '-' sign is greyed out at the bottom[next to the +] is that normal - to have a guest user, and it says it doesn't require a password

hi guys, thanks, but tried all that was listed. I can't even get safari to launch, it immediately quits - as does

Finder, Sys pref... there is no top menu, no HD icon on desktop. I removed all cookies etc on admin & have

warn me when i visit fraud. sites. When i try to force quit - any & all pop up and disappear immediately - so I can't force quit either

I had deleted all other users. rebooted. tried putting in a new 2ndary user -- SAME issues. so far, thank god,

i don't see a problem with the admin user...
