Q: Cannot Boot from USB or DVD

Hello,

I cannot install or reinstall an OS because my Mac won't boot into anything apart from its hard drive. El Capitan boots up OK and I can use the Mac, but I want to reinstall the OS due to errors and I cannot put any OS from any boot device on the iMac.

So the problem I have is that I cannot reinstall the OS from USB or disc, nor can I put Linux on there.

Tails USB, Tails DVD, Mint DVD, Ubuntu USB - none work.

- All these .isos are tested and working flawlessly

- Have tried the disc & USB in 4 Macs - 1 MacBookPro and 3 iMacs. MBP works fine but none of the 3 iMacs can recognise it or boot from it.

- The disc was burned on one of the iMacs, also a USB came from a Win machine (so diff sources)

- If I insert the disc when I'm in any of the 3 iMac OS then I get a msg "cannot read this disc"

- On one of the iMacs I get a msg after boot saying "your computer was restarted bc of a problem" and I get the below err msg

To reinstall El Capitan, boot into the Recovery Partition by holding down Command + R on startup. Then you have 2 options  you can select from. If you want to wipe the HD clean and start over from scratch open Disk Utility and select the drive and then select Erase. This will erase EVERYTHING from the HD. Then exit DU and select Install OS X and select the drive you just erased. Before you do that BACKUP FIRST!!!!!

However in most circumstances it is not necessary to do a format and install. All that is needed is installing OS X. This will not erase any data (again though it is wise to backup first) and will simply re-install OS X.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply mate. Unf I do not need to reinstall El Capitan. I need to install a Linux distro (I need to db with OSX and Mint/Ubuntu) so I need it to boot from USB/DVD.

The recovery partition provides no help either. I get a grey screen, then the message "your computer restarted bc of a problem", then it boots as normal (see attached error log above)

Also this doesn't help me install Linux. Do you know why would I not be able to boot from any DVD or USB? I need to install a different OS (I want to db with Yosemite and Mint/Ubuntu) ?

I would look into using rEFInd.

Thanks mate, OK will give that a go to get Linux on but won't be surprised if it doesn't work. As I said the issue is across several unconnected iMacs so I'm going to keep trying for a solution.

Thanks a lot for your help though mate.

Can anyone help me with the recovery error?
