Thunderbolt Ethernet showing up as Bluetooth PAN

I've been having issues with my thunderbolt ethernet since upgrading to El Capitan. I tried all the "recommended" fixes from the web, including altering my network preferences plist file, making a new location, deleting the plist, rebooting a hojillion times, and so on.

Now the network is working, and I have tasty fast ethernet (gigabit at home), except that it is showing up in the network panel as via my bluetooth PAN. Which is silly, since my phone is off.

Here's the screenshot with my wifi off. Note that the Bluetooth PAN normally connects through my phone (for when I need to tether), but I turned the phone off specifically for this test.

I've done just about everything in the "delete it and re-add it" category. It's super-frustrating, especially when I get that "hey, we have a software update for you that you can't ignore" and it's iTunes which I never use, or worse, XCode which I actually do use, but seems to always upgrade by re-downloading in toto, so four gigs of download that I'd way rather be on my fast wired network.

I guess at least now it works? so I shouldn't complain too much? I'll just leave this here for future software engineers to ponder over.

This one is really weird...

Note that your active connection is via WiFi, judging from your screenshot.

Did you try merely deleting both Network Services (Bluetooth PAN and Thunderbolt->Ethernet) and adding them back?
