Q: An unexpected error

I have an Airport Extreme Capsule 2T.  It has been working fine, but it is not seen on the network.  It will function as a pass thru for the internet connection. It does put out a wireless signal, but I can not get into it to reset the password.  I tried the soft reset, but nothing seemed to happen.  I tried the hard reset, but that requires a password.I asked airport utility to open it, but that said an unexpected error try again. Not very helpful. I have turn off everything on the network and rebooted everything.  That did not change anything. I am running Le Capitan 10.11.5 the Airport Utility is version is 6.3.6.  The Airport Time Capsule needs a firmware update, but I can not do that because I can not get into the Airport Utility program.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I have an Airport Extreme Capsule 2T.

What exact model is your Time Capsule (TC)? The first TC that offered a 2 TB drive was the 2nd generation model: A1302.

It has been working fine, but it is not seen on the network.

I am assuming that you mean that it cannot be "found" using the AirPort Utility, but that it can be found by wireless network clients to connect to ... correct?

The Airport Time Capsule needs a firmware update, but I can not do that because I can not get into the Airport Utility program.

The AirPort Utility uses both Bonjour (aka, mDNS) & IPv6 to "find" an AirPort base station.

When having difficulties accessing a base station with this utility, try the following in order, checking accessibility with the utility after each step:

    • Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the base station wirelessly, make sure that your Mac or iOS device is connected to that Wi-Fi network.
    • If you are still unable to access it, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
    • Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back it.
    • Verify that both the base station and your computer are configured for IPv6 Link-local only.
    • Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.
