You can also try an erase and restore in iTunes, but that may not help at all judging by the age of the iPod.
Apple may replace the battery ask at the store, the iPod 5th gen stopped being made in 2007 so I doubt they will fit a new battery - it is now obsolete. The lithium ion batteries eventually stop holding a charge & need replacing
One option is to purchase a third party battery, iFixit.com has guides & can usually sell you the battery & tools to fit it yourself. https://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPod
Otherwise you will need to find an online service or store that can fit a new battery for you. The parts inside are very delicate, so think twice if you are not very technically competent - find someone who is to do it for you.
