I need to use Windows Excel on my macbook for a course and I am not sure how to do this safely.

Microsoft makes a version of Excel for Mac.

If for some reason you cannot use Excel for Mac, then you will need to install Windows on the Mac either through Bootcamp or a Virtualization option such as Parallels or Virtual Box, and install Microsoft Office in that Windows installation.

Note that for either option you will need a Windows Installer DVD or ISO, and a valid License Key, which means you will need to purchase Windows from Microsoft.
