Q: iPad is asking for a 4-digit passcode that I did not set

Turned on iPad and it is asking for a 4-digit passcode that I did not set.  I there anything I can do besides resetting it back to the factory restore?

Are you sure it's not asking you to create a passcode?

Try restarting: hold Power and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.

Does anybody else have access to your iPad that might have set the passcode? If it has been a while since you restarted, anybody that used your iPad in the interim could have done it. It might pay to ask around.

If that's not the case and if Diana's suggestion doesn't help, then the only way to remove the passcode is to restore the device. If you have a backup, you can restore that after unlocking the iPad.
