Just got a message that my ID was locked and had to reset my password. Is there any way to determine why it was locked. I am still uneasy about two factor authentication but that is primarily because I have not done the due diligence to understand how Apple has implemented it better. I still would like to know why this occurred and how I can attempt to track down its origin
If you entered your Apple ID password incorrectly too many times, Apple automatically locks your account to protect your security.
Usually just resetting your Apple ID password will unlock your account.

Apple's system would interpret multiple failed attempts to access your account i.e.: wrong password as a possible breach and lock the account as a precaution for you.
It's possible "you" had nothing to do with this.
If anyone online hammers away at your account, trying to guess the password, the account gets locked to protect you.
There is a difference between asked for your password often and being made to reset it often.
Your OP was about having to reset it. Now it's about being asked for it often.
They aren't necessarily caused by the same thing.
Maybe you should try 2FA. You will get emails about attempts to sign in with your Apple ID, but they will also name a place and time the attempt was made.
