Q: Why is the screen on my 2010 iMac going dark?

Recently two problems started occurring with my 2010 iMac. I don't know if they are related, but I've read the answers to similar questions here, and have tried suggested solutions, but with no positive results.

My screen has begun to go completely dark at times. The computer is still running, but I get nothing but a black screen.

Things I've tried: running a virus scan, resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, lowering the brightness of the screen, installing a 3rd party app to increase the fan speed (on the premise that maybe its overheating).

When I lowered the brightness of the screen, I noticed my second problem.  Upon restart, the screen brightness would be back up to where it was before I lowered it. (at about 70%)

Unless I get some other ideas from the good folks here, my next step will be to open my computer up and start checking connections to see if all cables are seated properly.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Uninstall the antivirus app. There are no viruses that can attack Mac.OS X. So, anti-virus programs are selling a cure for a disease that doesn't exist. And they are renowned for borking Mac systems.

That's probably not the cause of your problem but in the future, it will be.

When the screen goes black, if you shine a flashlight on it do you see the Desktop?

    Have you tried resetting SMC?

    Yes

OK, that's good. Nothing wrong with the display itself. You might try running AHT(Apple Hardware Test)

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

It will at least not give you any false positives although it may not find all problems.

Also please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

It was acting up again earlier today. It started with the black outs again.

I could "wake" it back up by clicking my mouse button, but that only lasted a second or two before it would go dark again.

I was eventually able to navigate to the System Preferences monitor window.  Raising, then lowering back down, the brightness level seemed to "fix" it...at least for now.

As for diagnostics, I restarted, holding down the "D" key and AHT did not appear.

I did the "Option D" thing to use the web version and got this message "Apple Hardware Test does not support this machine", so there are no results to share.

But, here is the EtreCheck report:

Remove Sophos completely. It's already crashing on you.

    Uninstall Sophos

    https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120838.aspx

You have some apps I'n not familiar with but let's start with Sophos.

After that post another EtreCheck report.
