problem installing Mavericks OS to macbook pro

I've erased my drive. I have the restore disk in an external hard drive connected to the macbook pro. When I go to disk utility I select OS X base system in source, and put the hard drive in destination, then I hit restore and I get a window that says, start up disk can't be used as a restore source. It says Restart your computer using recovery system and open disk utility again. When I do that, it still won't let me use the disk. When I do that I get the same window, Start up disk can't be used, go to recovery system.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
